Senate Democrats Bet on All of Us
The Senate Democrats have a strategy that must surely be something like this, fairly simple, but potentially highly risky gamble.
The American people have the fortitude and focus to sustain and grow a visible resistance movement for the next two, to four, years.
If congressional Democrats, chiefly in the U.S. Senate, can delay and, or, hobble both the Trump Administration’s picks for Cabinet positions and the two or three deep slates they must fill in key federal government agencies, they can reverse, or at least slow-down, the Democratic Party’s electoral decline, and in the meantime, save their jobs. But hey that’s politics.
These agencies have the ability and some may say, the propensity, to directly, sometimes significantly, and often swiftly effect peoples lives in every state of the country. Just ask the two-million federal employees how their lives were effected by the inability of the U.S. Congress to reach agreements on its budget, and cause a shut-down, or slow-down that effected them and the thousand of companies who work with federal government supported efforts.
Delaying the ability of the administrations appointments to the agencies might swiftly have a swell of reaction in We The People. If democrats can delay the smooth transition until the 2018 Senate elections, and vigorously tar the Republicans with the failure to deliver Trump campaign promises through the delays they have in part helped bring about, then..?
Democrats are facing some tough battles in the 2018 race. While outrage over the first 23 days of President Trump, is at a pitch not seen since the Tea-Party movements, Democrats are betting on being able to sustain this outrage though the next 22 months until,at least, November 6, 2018.
And the biggest bet in that gambit is the American people. If Congressional Democrats do their bit in this medium-term strategic push, then the Progressive Movement, the American people in generally,must do theirs.
Much has been talked about ‘outrage fatigue’ and this is the Trump Administration’s primary weapon in resisting the Resistance. Progressives must continue to take a stand, to raise their voices, and keep pressure on their representatives at a local and national level. To keep the issues front of mind, and to be able to not be distracted by celebrity-level misinformation.
Progressives must keep coming out onto the streets, contact and lobby their ‘representatives’ and, get deeply involved in local level policy and politics, and most importantly, stay peaceful, logical and mindful.
Congressional Democrats are not alone in betting the house on the ability of the American people to not be distracted or discouraged, the world, literally The World, has, sometimes literally, skin in this all-too-real game.
